This square lead planter has a Celtic interlaced border. This type of work was practiced by the Pictish artist-craftsmen of the north of the British Isles. The Picts were the inhabitants of Scotland before the Scots, they ceased to be a separate tribe in about the tenth century. The wooden patterns for this lead planter were designed, and hand carved by Glyn Brawn. The panels were then cast in oiled sand, before being welded together and fettled. Finally the lead planter was given a coat of patination oil to seal the surface of the lead. This foundry-cast lead planter has been traditionally handmade in England by Heritage Lead Planters.
