This lead window box has a wide double-Celtic interlaced pattern flowing seamlessly around the outside. This type of work was practiced by the Pictish artist-craftsmen of the north of the British Isles. The Picts were the inhabitants of Scotland before the Scots, they ceased to be a separate tribe in about the tenth century. The wooden patterns for this lead planter were designed, and hand carved by Glyn Brawn. The panels were then cast in oiled sand, before being welded together and fettled. The lead window box was then given a coat of patination oil, before the face of the Celtic knotwork interlacing was traditionally gilded using silver leaf. This foundry-cast solid lead planter has been traditionally handmade in England by Heritage Lead Planters.
