This Scallop Shell Lead Planter is decorated with a delicately stylized scallop shell nestled in two bunches of laurel leaves. The scallop shell has been a symbol of Venus and of rebirth since antiquity. This is why Botticelli has Venus standing demurely in a scallop shell in his famous painting. The scallop shell as an emblem of rebirth was also adopted by mediaeval pilgrims who would quite often wear the shell about their necks.
